Cory Aquino
Cory Aquino. The first woman president of the Philippines and Asia. The “plain housewife” who never in her wildest dreams had thought that she would someday become president, let alone become one of the most respected and beloved political figures in Philippine history. She was named ‘Woman of the Year’ by Times Magazine, in 1986, for her fight to overthrow the 20 years dictatorial regime of Ferdinand E. Marcos. In 1992, as her term grew to an end, President Aquino refused to seek reelection. By this, she tried to set an example and make people aware that the post of the President was never permanent. Today, Corazon Aquino is fondly remembered as the ‘Mother of Philippine Democracy’ by many Filipinos.
